Conclusion
If you’re often hit with the sudden urge to cache but don’t carry your standard GPS with you all the time, then this is a great solution. But other then the cool factor, it’s just not all that exciting. Perhaps after a few updates it will be more indespensible.
A few weeks ago I finally became a full subscriber and supporter of Geocaching.com. I really didn’t expect a great benefit from it other then showing some love to a site I’ve useing more and more and have really been enjoying.
Little did I know it would reach out and try to increase my addiction. One of the features of being a member is having the ability to create instant alerts based on various criteria. Since my pattern has been to start with the closest cache to my home and work my way out, I thought it’d be cool to be alerted whenever a new cache is placed just so I don’t overlook one.
Well, as I’m sitting at home watching a movie an email comes in and I notice it was a Groundspeak alert. I just had to take a peek.. this was my first one. As soon as I saw it was a brand new cache I immediately got excited.. wow.. the opportunity to be the very first to log a find on a new cache! But after some quick Google mapping and looking at the setting sun I decided I couldn’t pull it off before nightfall. Sure enough, someone else did.
I guess the point I wanted to make is now there’s a whole new set of things in my head that I’m resisting. For example, for years I’ve wanted a mobile broadband Internet connection for my laptop but I’ve always concluded that I’m either at the office or at home and otherwise driving from one to the other with no opportunity to surf. Now I’m starting to think that I can have these alerts page my phone and where ever I am I can pull over and get details on a new cache!
For now I will resist my urge, but it is just one more log on the fire towards a new full-on addiction. Not that I’m not already addicted to caching, but I just sense that “next level” on the horizon.

After not taking my daily walk for a while I finally set to one of our local greenways and my has the weather changed since I was last out! The car was so nice and cozy, how could it be so cold outside? I had remembered that I had put a coat in my car for emergancies so I figured I could just throw that on… well.. let’s just say it appears that one of my cats got it and it’s going into the dumpter now. So.. long story short I did have an extra sweatshirt with me, doubled it up and managed to get a little over a mile in anyhow. Determination!!!
So.. apparently it’s getting a little cooler.. I think I see a trend here.. someone tell Mr. Gore please! Anyways… I took my walk today somewhere much warmer, my local Target. I was talking to my virtual wife in thesimsonline.com about how I needed a new jacket and breifly described what I was looking for. Wouldn’t you know in seconds she shot back a link to a jacket I loved!!! (She’s a smart girl, my Paulina is.) It’s a Mossimo Military Jacket in Black. The fit was just right and no gaudy designer labels and lots of pockets for all my gadgets! Of course since I was going to call this little adventure my power walk (yea I know, that’s a stretch) I had to go up and down every isle of the store (and I think security was following me), but while I was doing my laps I came across another item I’ve been wanting for a long time.. a walking stick!!

With such a cute name George Curious, how could I resest hunting this cache down!
Well, after watching this video you’ll agree that maybe I should have done this one on a different day. I actually picked this cache because it had pretty much guaranteed me a nice 3 mile hike and excercise is certainly something I can use!
It started off very well on our Rail to Trails network and was only about a thenth of a mile off the main trail, it should have been reasonably easy.
Not even half way up though I realized I didn’t have my cell phone with me anymore. I know I left a twitter message when I started but couldn’t remember if that was from the car or en route. The more I walked the more I belived it fell out of my pocket and that pretty much occupied my mind.
When I got to the location it was very uncomfortable. The nice spring I was looking for had apparantly turned into a tick infested pool of stagnent water. I looked but honestly between being bummed about my phone and being eaten alive by who knows what, my heart just wasn’t into it. So I wrapped up and headed back to the car hoping to find my phone along the way.. which I didn’t
When I got home my house phone was ringing.. caller ID said it was me!!! “Hello? You found my phone!!!!?” Turns out a homeless man was on the trail with his bicycle travelling back to the homeless shelter when he found my phone. I was saavy enough to look at the address book and call the entry labeled “home” and ta da!!!! So I drove to the shelter to retrieve my phone and give him a nice little reward which I think he really appreciated.
Looks like a little buddhism at work here, turning the poison of an uncomfortable treck through the woods into medicine by exchange goodwill with someone less fortunate. NMRK
